More on Larry Adlers sound

Besides  pretending I was in Italy in order to to listen to it; (seems to be blocked here in the states) the pitch was off! Aaaaaggghh!  Bummer!

If I actually wanted to play along with this number, I'd hafta fix it, cuz "outta tune" makes my eyes bleed.

There! Despite all that complaining, I still enjoyed listening to Tommy

Here's another one by Tommy Morgan.
Just him and the Harmonica.
No additional backing.
You can actually hear the "too too too" on some short notes
 and some slight air leaks.
Maybe he's playing a 270

Anyway, Very impressive I think.

Tommy Morgan, who I regard as a true legend of our instrument, does a technically excellent job with this piece. However he seems to  play it pretty much exactly as it's written which I feel makes it come across as a little bland. In comparison when the composer Tommy Reilly plays it he takes a rubato approach which for me at least gives it more 'feel' and reduces the need for accompaniment.

Yeah, I gotta agree; there's a lot to be said for players who habitually bend the rules.

Ok, problemo. (warning! Nothing in the following is allowed to be construed as anything other that this scribe's opinion)

1.. From what I have heard about (or seen) from Mr. Reilly, he was an upper class player whom seemed to associate with the more elite, gave lessons at his beautiful home, trained many wonderful players..BUT was (probably) in control of what, where, when he played. And so wasn't under the same obligations. I saw him as a very relaxed classy gentleman who was surely glad that the war was over and he was no longer a prisoner. P.s. I never met him nor talked with him. Wish I had. So I could be totally all wet.

2.. Mr. Morgan, on the other hand, was always a studio musician. And therefore subject to the whims/regulations/wishes of the people whom he was contracted to. Meanwhile Morgan, while seldom known in the u.s., is FROM the u.s. and has played on dozens of movie tracks, hundreds of t.v. programs, and (maybe) thousamds of other products..like commercials, etc. Many times he was under pressure to find a 'way' to do something with harmonica that some found to be UN-doable in order to get the job done. Speaking with him I found him to be a 'regular guy', warm and soft spoken. Again I could be totally off base.

I nearly forgot I got to see and hear Tommy Morgan when he entertained at the SPAH I attended (can't now remember
which one!) He was fantastic, playing so many of his well-known TV show themes. Fred was amazed since he'd never
known that a chromatic player was responsible for so much of the music he remembered and had grown up with. He
LOVED Tommy's Saturday Night performance probably more than any other - until Charlie McCoy in 2013. HIS CD's Fred
insisted on buying after the Show (hey, what can i say, I'm married to a non-harmonica-lover). At least he does appreciate
harmonica music to some small degree here and there, and individual players he's heard who are friends.
