Some of you will have seen this one. Many of us have stolen, researched or borrowed from well known players. "Classical" musicians do this too.

Your favorite guitarist certainly is in control of his performance, but his style and message not for everybody.

I read somewhere that Glen Campbell could play in any style and every recording company, group, band or whatever wanted him to join or to fill in when a particular player couldn't appear. After a while he went out on his own because he wanted to sing. If I haven't got the story right, please jump in and correct me.

He's an Aussie. I believe he's here in the states nowadays. Barbara and I sometimes watch his videos for an hour or so. He's got a lot of them, and keeps making more. He got started listening to Chet. I saw him in one video once where he played a Les Paul with a rock band, but he always does one man shows. He really doesn't need anyone else. I think the guy's better on a guitar than Howard Levy on a suck-harp. Really!

His name is Tommy Emmanuel. He's a 68 year old Aussie with a unique and complex finger style of playing. He's known as one of the world's best acoustic guitarists, and his performances are VERY energetic! Lots of folks like his more raucous songs ... of which there are many to pick from. I'm amazed at them, too, but I tend to like his "softer, more tender" style of playing. Here's one of my favorites from Tommy:

For the record, ! COULDN'T "steal" from Chet if my life depended on it. With few exceptions

my ADHD only lets me do one thing at a time, so thumb picking the bass (Chet Atkins style) while picking with the remaining fingers is outta-da-question. I can sorta play Arlow Guthrey's "Alice's Restaurant" but I do it so badly that it doesn't count as an exception.

I'm not even sure why I can play it at all. As soon as I add an extra function to whatever I'm doing, the first function just stops. I think that's prolly the definition of the condition. On the other hand, Barbara still sez I'm incredibly handsome, so there's that.

Yeah, that number gives me goosebumps.

I guess I'm a pretty emotional guy (and gettin' worse with age

) and have always put great importance in feeling every note I play. When I try to hide it (which I do sometimes even though I don't know why) I usually regret it, cuz I believe it lessens the performance. When I'm playing alone in my little room, I'm free to let it all out, and that's when I enjoy what I'm playing the most. Sometimes, I even tear up; so I guess it might be a pride thing that I still hafta work on? Like having to dry my eyes and blow my big nose after a number. Last Sunday at the concert at church, I played "Mary" and pretty much "lost it" as I finished.

Aaaaanyway, that's the way this guy plays the guitar, and I think the freedom the above method affords Mr. Emmanual is a key component in his performance, and helps him be as great as he is.

Ed, You are right about Glen Campbell, a very talented guitarist, he was a studio musician in LA for quite a long time in the 60s-70s he was one of a number of musicians called the Wrecking Crew and the played on hundreds of pop songs in the era. Glen Campbell did gig with a number of Bands, including the Beach Boys, before getting his own show and become famous. He was a terrific guitar player and somewhat underrated, indeed a great story with a sad ending passing away from dementia a few years ago.

Me too—
I use a flat pick, so when I try that style, I use what’s called “hybrid picking”, using my fingers along with a flat pick—a much inferior method.
When I heard Hot Tuna in the 60’s, I attempted to emulate Jorma, not knowing he was fingerpicking.
And I didn’t play harmonica then, so I was unaware that Will Scarlett was employing overbends!

Looks like a finger picker to me.

Jeff Beck eschewed the use of a flat pick in his later years.

Sixteenth notes are hard without a flat pick.

playing, and a few harp players try to copy my "unique"
style.

Copying another's style is a dead end. Develop your
own style, and make it flawless.
