Good Morning to all Zoomers!
Just wanted to come aboard this morning to wish all of you (a bit early!) a happy, safe, and healthy New Year.
It seems that the "computer virus" that has impacted a good number of our Thursday Zoomers over the past month has now made its way to SC.  It hasn't "laid me up", but it has certainly impacted my lung usage. 
So ... I won't be on the Zoom later today, but I'll be looking forward to next week.  The congestion I've had is now breaking up, and I'll be able to play again soon.  Enjoy your celebration of kicking off 2024!!

I'm planning to be on today's Zoom.  I've had the "computer virus" ... or whatever ... for almost two weeks.  It has resulted in LOTS of coughing, congestion, and lack of energy.  Today it's obviously better, but I'm not sure how much "breath" I'll have.  May play; may not.  Either way, it'll be a good way to start 2024.

Sure enough - abscess tooth in the front of my mouth. My jaw hurts all the way back.

I didn't play for the Zoom meeting today because of the "tooth pulling" thing, so I was more of an observer. Even at that, it was a hoot. (I learned a lot!)

Quick note (or maybe not that quick )
A lot of you folks out there are struggling with this or that aspect of playing these shiny little single button critters, right? I know this from 24 years of running this group. Over that period, I've heard/read about many who were feeling frustrated and complaining on-list, about not being able to get this or that thing mastered, after struggling with it since the flood, right? Of course I'm right, and although I don't remember who you are, you know I'm talking about you. 

Okay, here's an unbiased observation, of an "outside observer," me. (instead of a player/participant) of today's get-to-gether. True, it has taken some time (which is fully understandable) but in virtually all of the "regulars," I've observed a marked improvement in their overall "PPF" (personal playing factor) as well as their "MQ." (musical quotient) Yeah you're right, I just made those terms up, but they do fit the description.

In my opinion, the guys on our Zoom meetings, (I say that cuz we don't have any girls there yet ) without exception, and without particularly focusing on anything, have A-L-L shown significant improvements with:

• Style
• Articulation
• Improvization,
• Over-all sound
• phrasing - and very importantly:
• Confidence

Heck, even all our technical abilities are improving

Well, how do you ever expect to get "good,") without participating in what you're afraid of?" Like thinking you can learn to swim from reading a book! Ain't gunna happen, and even you did improve your playing on your own, it would take five times as long to do so, and then you'd come up with another excuse to stay away!

"I'm afraid I'd look stupid"
There's another thing that'll keep you playing at the level you're playing at now for the rest of your life! Hey! Our Zoom meetings are a virtual, on-line, "mistake factory." We all screw up, laugh about it, and keep playing. Like I like to tell everyone: "You're not that good anyway!" None of us are! and when you start to think that you're "all that," you're not gunna be much fun to hang around with anyway! Harrumph!

I've spent some time this morning getting acquainted with "All The Things You Are".  Of course, I've heard the song, but never tried to play it.  You did a great job with it yesterday.

Yes it is a great song, I believe the original key was Ab which I played it in, but because the melody drops below middle C you need to improvise a little if you're playing a 12 hole. I also play it in Bb as the melody stays within the range of a 12 hole. You can always use a 14/16 if you want to play the melody as written in Ab.

I've run into that need to "improvise" a couple of notes when it drops off the bottom of my 12-holer!  I tried it on a 16 holer but actually didn't care for the sound of the low notes.  I think I'll do as you did ... figure a way to help Mr. Kern a bit by improv.  I actually like it in Ab better.  Thanks!

While I think an orchestra tuned 12 holer is probably the best thing for me (personally) cuz I can pretty much play anything I want and stay with a small 12 hole platform, I really have a hard time getting used to that tuning. I like Gnarly's Bee-Bop tuning as well, but haven't been able to stick with that either. I have a nice SCX12, that Gnarly retuned to "Orchestra" for me, and I that think if can ever get used to that "brash" Suzuki sound, I will actually play it enough to get used to it. Here's an idea! Tape off the two top and bottom holes of my Boatshaped 16-6, and play that for a while, since it pretty much has the sound I like. (No really, I'm actually serious.

Yeah still hurts when I play for more than thirty seconds or so. (which is why I either stayed silent or played along with my git-fiddle )  Abcesses have a way of ruining your day, eh? No cavity or nothin', just an infection! Come to think of it, my grandfather (the one I look like) had the same thing when he was about seventy-five. Perfect teeth like piano keys. Never had a cavity in his life and bingo, outta nowhere; an abscessed canine. Wow! The sad thing is I'm prolly one still around who remembers that.  . After the sixth novocaine shot (I counted the holes last night) I told Jon (the dentist) to just get on with it and since I couldn't "bite down on a leather belt," I'd just try to twist off the arm-rests on his chair as a distraction. For a while, I thought I wuz gunna succeed. AAaaaggghhh!!! My eyes were watering when he finally got it out.

Besides being my dentist, Jon is also a pellet gun buddy, but I think he might be nervous that I'll shoot him in the back the next time we go to the range.
