Ahh, that's it. I knew there was another big one about 'crying' but couldn't remember its name.
I wonder if that 'edge/timbre' you're talking about was because he could mostly hear 'inside his head', so developed his style
because of it?

Sixty years ago there was a club called the Cavalier Beach Club in Virginia Beach, VA. Along with acts like Cab Calloway, Tommy Dorsey, Keeley Smith, and many others, Johnnie Ray came there often. Our farm family rented a little cottage there for a week every summer. My mom and dad loved to get dolled up and go dancing with those great old bands and singers. As young kids, my brother and two of our sisters would walk down the beach and sneak up on the porch to peek in the window of the club. Remember watching mom and dad glide around the floor while Johnnie sang “Please Mr Sun”. Fun memories!!

Probably Roy Orbison's big hit. I do it quite often.

No, I did mean the Johnnie Ray 'Little White Cloud that Cried' - in this thread. :) Couldn't originally remember which song he sang about crying.
Fwiw, Like you, I DO play Roy Orbison's 'Crying' - often. It's one of my go-to's on my Super 64. I LOVE that song and how it lays out on the 16 chromatic. It'll never get old. I also like 'Running Scared', but it's not quite so smooth and you have to decide whether to
do the 'dum, dedede dum', staccato on chromatic, or use something else instead - like the keyboard. ;)
