Dug out my Samson MeteorMic and fired up the Audacity software and broke through my fear of recording to do a test run...

This time I sized the window so I could see the whole thing

I have not learned well to keep plowing when I make a mistake (I generally turn into a trainwreck...a good portion of that was in my piano pedagogy where if I did make a mistake, I had to go back to the beginning and start over. I have deleted more mp3s....)

Badinerie.
Mvt. 7 from Orchestral Suite in B minor by J.S. Bach.
I spent quite a few months (in the wilderness) learning it in D minor, getting along with the breathing patterns and timing (D minor is rough for me, but I messed around with B minor, which I found worse for me with more of the draw notes in that key!

)
I spent my lesson last week on it, and in my discussion with my instructor (who is a very good sax/flute player), he gave me two good pieces of advice: (1) select a tempo that fits the chromatic (just because a transverse flute can play it at quarter note = 120 bpm doesn't mean that the tempo would work for me -- not even close), (2) see if a different key "fits" the chromatic better (which is why I'm trying A minor)
The main goal is to play it at a tempo so that it doesn't seem frantic (for the player and listener) and stays in character with the piece.

So, for better or (hopefully) not worse...

I'm having a bit of trouble learning Ashokan Farewell in D. The notes are fine. It's the breathing that's kicking my butt. There are passages where every note is a draw note. On top of that, many of them are notes at the low end of my Sirius 56 register. Playing there is a challenge when the draw/blow notes are "normal", but more so when so many repeated draws are found. I'm going to work on it a while more to see if it gets easier. If not, I may transpose it into some other more "breath friendly" key!

Any advice would be appreciated.

instrument: clarinet, flute,
trumpet, violin, etc.

Hi Brorat...
I see you started another thread on the Ashokan Farewell...I just took a look at it (in D)...It's tricky to quickly release air so one can play the succeeding draw notes (in D minor, playing the F as a blow note did help, but with the entire D major triad being draw notes (the blow notes being the E, G and C#), doesn't lend itself well to breath marks).
Will look at your thread to see how the transposition to F goes (I suspect that will fit a C chrom better)

I had mentioned that taking lessons has helped me with performance prep (r-e-l-a-x!)
I have two opportunities to perform Badinerie and Siciliano next week:
One will be on the 28th as part of an informal recital with the concert band, and the other will be part of a recital of Musical Surprise students on the 30th
