Sleighride on Diatonic Harmonicas
« on: August 24, 2011, 05:40:20 PM »
Hi--
Here is a YouTube of me playing Sleighride on diatonic harmonicas, custom tuned to my New World tuning. I was going to teaching it to my student using a chromatic, and discovered that it was easy on diatonic, if you swap out harps.
http://www.youtube.com/v/9zQnxxYRAQw?version=3&hl=en_US
My tuning has no missing major scale steps, and the draw bends in the first octave give you the b3, b5, and b7 of the major key. Holes 5-10 are the same as 4-9 on a standard (Richter tuned) harp.
I will be selling this harmonica already tuned for $50 to those who wish to try one, using a Special 20, in all keys--$10 more with a TurboLid--plus shipping.

Oh so glad you asked.
I have decided that nwt is basically circular or spiral--it starts on draw 1 with the tonic, so blow 1 can be whatever low note you desire, and the other notes can be draw bent (as say, minor 7 or major 6--I usually just put the major 7th in, for continuity).
It proceeds in spiral fashion, straightening out at hole 8, so at that point it's not spiral anymore  ;)
So holes 5-10 are like Richter 4-9, which makes transition from "normal" harmonica pretty easy.
You get all the good blue notes from the draw bends on holes 2, 3, 4, and 5 (b3, b5, b7, b9--no bend on hole 6, 'cause it's just like hole 5).
And you can still overbend to get those squawky duck calls . . .
I don't really like spiral, but I sure like those draw bends!
See attached chart for more info and also the intervals if you are brave enough to retune your own--

It's that time of year again!
I will be including my arrangement of Sleigh Ride on three custom tuned (as stated above, basically spiral tuned) diatonics at my date on the 23rd, so I retuned a G to get one in Bb.
I will record a practice session soon to post to this thread.
Lotta ghosts on this thread, here's to all of you who have hung in!
