Meditation from Thais by Jules Massenet...
« on: January 06, 2013, 04:18:22 PM »
... I think (hope!) that that is the correct title...

Would it be possible to get a chart of this beautiful piece?

Please and Thank you :)

Thanks for that link, Tom. Although I don't read music (yet ;))I will definitely learn to. I'm having pretty good results with several of Henry's TABS, so I thought IF he could do this piece....

Thanks again

That's a cool website, all right! This file is available in many forms, including MIDI--so if you are an electronic musician, you can read the note names from the sequence.

I am not great on the classics but I know this one!
My wife plays it on a James Galway CD.
It should fit on a 12 holer OK so I have put it on the list.
It is more difficult to play without words, but this should be ok.

We had another request for Schindlers list.
I have been looking at it, but it won't fit onto a 12 holer.
From memory it goes up to around 15 draw!

As Gary mentioned, there are audio files on www.flutetunes.com, which will help any tab reader to work it out. There are YouTube recordings of it too, I'm sure.

Hi Henry,

I'm playing 16 holers (well trying to, if you know what I mean) so if I could be somewhat selfish ;) ;) ;)!!!

Sure would appreciate it...I have a feeling that utilizing the full musical notation (as in Tom's link) together with your TABS PLUS one of the most "addictive"pieces of music ever, would be an excellent way for this duffer to learn to properly understand this music-theory stuff! :) :) :)

Thanks (in advance?)

Hi Gary,

Yeah, it seems that a keyboard (I've tried to learn guitar over the years with dismal results!!) would probably go a long way to unraveling some of the "mysteries" of this stuff...ebay here I come...

Keyboards are pretty affordable, and the corporeal presence of an actual keyboard would be an asset.
I am getting kind of tired of virtual, one of the nice things about the harmonica is its analog nature.

Hi Henry,

At last count I have 9 different recordings of " Meditation" from Youtube - 3 Harmonica versions. But I wanted to let you know that I was on your youtube channel this morning and listened to and enjoyed several of your uploads - especially "A Nightingale..." and "September Song"...but for some reason it wouldn't let me leave a (nice) comment...?!

(So my efforts to bribe you with flattery were foiled ;))

Oh yes..for a long time now.

But what happened was, I listened to several of your pieces (love the sound of that Seydel btw) and when I went to leave the message a screen pops up telling me to "change my username to something else" (I don't use my real name)  so I filled in the real name...but then it just hangs up on me!?!?  So if you happen to see a comment with the name "rexetnostrajura44" you'll know it's me... :D

Hi McManus,

I have Bonfiglio's version and it is probably my favorite harmonica version, just a squeak above Franz Chmel's.
If I can learn to play this piece properly I'll go to my reward a contented corpse :)

Thanks

For everyone keen on the Schindler's theme a free public license download of the score for Strings and Solo Violin
is available at http://musescore.com/user/22144/scores/38938. Other versions and instruments are at:
http://www.justsheetmusic.com/sheet-music/john-williams-theme-from-schindlers-list/ but they do attract
small fees.

The very first note dips below middle C so 12 holes is already not enough just as Henry was saying. Then it flies
into the stratosphere but being a violin it should suit most 14 holes.

Apologies to those unable/not wanting to use sheet music.  I will be be painstakingly mapping the holes to the
score myself.

Have a great day/night!

I know this topic is old, and I'll start a new one if necessary. I have a problem.

I used to be able to play the Thais piece quite well, while listening to Larry Adler and the orchestral backing. I had quite an expensive collection of Hohner chromonicas at the time, and to cut a long story short - I moved to Thailand from the UK and lost all my harps.

I remember the last and highest note of the piece was played in the last hole - but I can't remember if it was a 12 or 16 hole instrument. Whichever, I was able to find every note on that harp to play the piece. I'm a real beginner with the harp but I'm not a bad classical pianist. I took to the harp very quickly. I'm old enough to have had a 'melodica' as well  ;D

Okay here's the cover of the CD:

I'm guessing I had a 12 hole tenor harp in C. Does this sound right?

If so, I'm going to get a C Tenor version of the Hohner CX-12. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for your kind indulgence!

Hello, AZooZa.
How far is that,
from Cookamonga?

I have 2 opinions for your consideration.

First, Larry Adler played a 12-hole Hohner
Super Chromonica almost exclusively, so
a 12-hole slide chromatic will work fine,
depending on the key of the music.

Second, I love my Hohner CX-12 Tenor.
It 's lowest pitch is the piano C3. It's my
favorite everyday instrument.

I like it's range, compared to the standard
C4 lowest-pitched (middle C on the music
staff and on your piano).

Best Regards, Stay Healthy

Many thanks John!

I've narrowed down my predicament now. The link that was posted below...

http://www.flutetunes.com/tunes.php?id=416

...was extremely useful. However, that's in D major, whereas Larry plays it in F major as per here:

Having checked it out on my piano, I now think that I need the C4-C7 range CX-12, and NOT the tenor, as C7 is the highest note in the Adler rendition.

Make sense?

Thank you so much!
